Digital care – how technology can support family carers

Updated: 20 October 2025 · by Rolf Krause

Care is one of the greatest challenges facing society today. At the end of 2023, almost 5.7 million people in Germany were in need of care – and the number is rising. Millions of families are therefore directly or indirectly affected by care.

Is the care really enough? Is medication being taken reliably? Is the home care service there when it is needed? These questions stay with family carers day after day. Many feel left on their own.

My personal experience

I know exactly what I am talking about. My family had a severe care case – 80 kilometres from where I live. From care level 2 to 5, I experienced every challenge at first hand. The constant worry: Is she drinking enough? Is she well looked after? Is she being cared for reliably?

These experiences shaped me. And they awakened in me the wish to create solutions that can help other family carers.

Digital care – a new approach

Today, many people talk about digitalisation, artificial intelligence and smart systems. But in everyday care, these technologies have still arrived far too rarely – even though they could make exactly the difference where safety, trust and relief are concerned.

Digital care does not mean replacing people with machines. Rather, it means that technology supports people so that more time and energy remain for what really matters – care, closeness and attention.

My solution: care-attendant

When I retired, I used the time to turn my experience into a project: the digital care management system DIAS within the Care Assistant project. It is designed to take the strain off family carers, provide security and make the path to a care level (Pflegegrad) easier – without the paperwork chaos.
